What is this and what is it for?

The MG FreePlay RoomMute is a practical solution for trumpet players who want to practice at a greatly reduced volume without the resistance and playing limitations of traditional practice mutes. The FreePlay mute helps to keep your playing as natural as possible because of the unchanged resistance. 

This concept itself is not new. Similar room mutes existed in the past, but they were expensive, are no longer produced in Europe and have become difficult to find. At MG Trumpets we set out to redesign this idea with three clear goals: make it more affordable, improve usability and improve overall performance. We believe we have succeeded in creating a significantly improved and more practical version of this concept.

Traditional practice mutes work by placing a mute inside the bell. The MG FreePlay RoomMute turns that concept around: instead of putting a mute in your trumpet, you put your trumpet inside the mute. By capturing the sound outside the instrument rather than restricting it inside the bell, the trumpet keeps its natural blowing resistance, response and playing characteristics.

A flexible solution

The system is fully adjustable:

Height adjustable for sitting or standing practice Angle adjustable for optimal playing position.

Adjustable bell position so you can choose how far the instrument enters the chamber Variable sound reduction depending on position

Soft protective rim to prevent damage to the instrument

Does it really work? 

YES. The MG FreePlay RoomMute reduces sound levels by approximately 20 to 30 dB, which is a very significant reduction. For comparison, a reduction of 20 dB already makes the sound roughly four times quieter to the human ear. At 30 dB reduction the perceived volume drops to about eight times quieter than the original sound level. 

Even when positioning the bell deeper into the chamber for maximum sound reduction, the playing feel remains natural and free blowing.

In a  few words; this mute lets you practice at home without disturbing your neighbors, while still maintaining a natural playing feel.

A flugelhorn version with a larger opening can also be made.

Optionally, the unit can be equipped with a microphone mount, allowing the MG FreePlay RoomMute to double as a controlled recording solution for practice or studio use.
